More than 200,00 Honda CR-V and CR-Z vehicles will be built in 2019, the Japanese automaker said, and the first units will arrive in 2021.
“I would like to announce that we will build a total of 200,073 CR-Vs and CR,Z in 2019,” Honda CEO Takashi Iwai said at a press conference in Tokyo on Thursday.
“This number will be based on the production of the CR-VE and CRV models.”
The company also plans to build a new range of hybrid vehicles and will introduce a new all-electric vehicle, Honda said.
As part of the new plan, Honda will also produce new SUVs and hybrids for export.
Honda will also begin importing the CRV from the US, which has been a source of great pride for Honda’s customers, including US president Donald Trump.
But the announcement of the global sales figures was welcomed by Honda executives, who say the new numbers demonstrate that the global market is finally seeing the kind of growth that the Japanese manufacturer is enjoying.
We’ve made huge strides in manufacturing since I joined the company in 2019 and we are seeing huge gains,” Iwai told reporters in Tokyo.
Iwai added that Honda was building the CR cars to meet the needs of customers.
It is also the first time the Japanese company will build vehicles outside of the US.
Last year, Honda unveiled a range of compact SUVs, such as the new Honda Fit and the compact Civic, which were unveiled in the US in late 2019.
However, it was not until 2021 that Honda plans to manufacture cars in the UK.
Earlier this month, Honda also said it would begin selling vehicles in the European Union, which it has previously only offered in Japan.
The Japanese automakers have been under pressure to grow sales and profit in the past year.
During the past two years, Honda sales have slipped to the lowest levels since the early 1990s, and Iwai has repeatedly warned that the company was in a period of financial crisis.
Since joining the Japanese market, Honda has struggled to keep up with its rivals and has struggled with a lack of key product lines.
A recent report by The Wall Street Journal suggested that Honda could be facing a third quarter collapse that could lead to the loss of more than 50,000 jobs.
For now, it is too early to say whether or not Honda will deliver on its 2020 target.
While Honda has long had a reputation for being a company that builds cars, the US company has struggled over the past few years with its production and sales.
